Randy Orton vs Sheamus (Spoilers)

I was going to title this post ‘Christian’s Turn’, but I didn’t want to spoil the end of the match for people who haven’t had a chance to watch Smackdown.

I was a bit disappointed in the turn. Maybe it is because we recently saw a Great Turn from R-Truth just a few weeks ago on Raw, but I thought the actual turn itself lacked something. I was especially disappointed with Christian pointing to a prone Randy Orton saying “I know I can beat you, Randy.” Um, well then why haven’t you?

In order for the turn to be something special, Christian needed to DESTROY Orton. Most of the memorable turns including some level of destruction. R-Truth beat on Morrison for a long time and had a psychotic look in his eyes. In this one, he just knocked a tired Randy (who would have lost the match if it wasn’t for Christian’s shenanigans) down with the belt and posed a bit. I have the utmost confidence that Christian will be a great top heel, but this was a very lackluster start. I mean, it’s not like he doesn’t have experience in a Great Turn.

Daniel Bryan versus Sin Cara

If WWE really wanted to get behind both of these guys, this could be a near top of the card PPV match in a couple of years. Both guys have the experience to put on good matches, they just need to have the opportunity to get the crowd behind them.

Edge Retrospective

Hulu has the Edge retrospective that aired on Smackdown a few weeks ago. I missed it the previous times it has aired, but it is a really nice piece.

Smoking and Wrestling

I find it odd that R-Truth is getting so much flack for smoking on camera during his assault on John Morrison when Raw was in London. Apparently it is OK to beat someone within an inch of their life, but blowing smoke in their face while you are doing it is bad. The focus on the smoking was initially that it was bad for him and he knew it. During the beatdown, he blew the smoke because he knew it would piss his opponent off, not because he wanted to experience cool menthol taste at the moment.

A lot of people were acting like smoking was something that had never been done before on camera. I definitely remember The Big Show coming down to the ring smoking a cigarette a few years ago. He may have even smoked while IN the ring. I couldn’t find a clip of him smoking on Raw, but I found this clip of him smoking a cigarette as The Giant in WCW.

That clip happened back in 1998, so the smoking incident that I am thinking about obviously happened between then and now.

Even more recently, Jeff Hardy came to the ring during a TNA PPV and he stopped to light up.

I’m glad that WWE didn’t make R-Truth’s smoking a focal point of the feud, because it just would have given haters something to hate on. I am a bit disappointed that they had to address what is a very minor issue in the overall scheme of things. I’m not 100% the little kids watching that episode aren’t going to say “Wow, R-Truth is smoking, so I guess I should take it up too”, but part of me doubts it.

Dynamite Kid Injury Video

Like most people, I have heard that Dynamite Kid suffered a back injury that eventually led to the end of his career. Like a lot of people, I had never seen the match in which the back injury happened because it was never televised. While surfing around on YouTube, I found this video that claims to be bootleg footage of that match. I don’t know for sure if this is the actual match or if it is footage from another match with a great sell job by Dynamite, but I am willing to give the creator the benefit of the doubt because it is a very well done video.

I don’t have HDNet because I don’t have an HDTV, but I am tempted to get them just for the new Ring of Honor show. However, that would just be fiscally irresponsible.

Plus, I have to wonder how it got as far as it did without someone noticing the major league typo.
