Marty 'The Boogeyman' Wright has been released by WWE.

According to wwe.com, Marty Wright, better known to fans as The Boogeyman, has been released. Of course they wish him the best in all his future endeavors.

Image originally found on Wikipedia, used under a public domain license.

I was not a big fan of The Boogeyman when he first debuted. I remember thinking that his name should have been ‘The Bullet’, because he was ammunition for people who thought that professional wrestling was an asinine thing to be interested in. (Seriously, I thought that.) Nothing that he has done in his time with the company has changed that initial opinion. He was a cringeworthy character to me. Every time he came on screen, I hoped that it would only be for a few minutes. Nick Densmore’s Eugene was the same type of character to me, but I had seen enough of Densmore’s OVW work to know there was something behind the bad gimmick.

I hate to see anybody lose their job in this economy, but I don’t see how Wright could have been repackaged. The way I see it, his current skill set would limit him to being a bodyguard type, but Ezekiel Jackson already has that gimmick. He also never really looked that big to me, a fact that was glaring when he was in the ring with Kane in his last ECW match. I’m not even going to touch on the age issue because in a business where Rey Mysterio Jr is beating people like The Big Show, Kane and Mike Knox, then a 44 year old can beat someone half his age.

I will give him credit, though. I never thought The Boogeyman character would last as long as it did, even discounting the injury that kept Wright away for a long time. I also don’t think that we have seen the last of The Boogeyman. Despite my dislike for the character, there is no denying that he is unique and I would not be surprised to see him pop up every now and then in a comedy role. Sort of like The Godfather, Kamala or Golddust (before he was re-signed by the company). The only real difference between those characters and The Boogeyman is that they were all around during WWE/WWE hot periods when a lot more mainstream attention was being paid.

I wish him luck on the indies because I also don’t see much of a future for him at TNA or ROH.
